Medical Examination of Orphans from Ivankiv Children’s Home at Kiev Medical Center
Operation Blessing Medical Center in Kiev continues to provide medical aid for the needy Ukrainians. Between 500 and 700 people undergo complete medical examinations and receive free medical aid and medicines every month. Operation Blessing pays special attention to the children living in orphanages and shelters. For such children, qualified medical help is not always available. Besides, the financial support of the state for the medicines is so low that often, children don’t get even basic medicines. In April, 2008, 44 orphans from “Nest” Ivankiv Children’s Home were brought to OB Charitable Medical Center for medical examinations and tests. The kids had possibility to be examined by pediatrician, dentist, ophthalmologist, gynecologist and other doctors. Besides, they were made blood and urine tests, ECG, some of them were made Ultrasound research. Unfortunately, many of the kids already have serious illnesses, such as hypoplasia, anemia, tuberculosis infections, and heart diseases.
12-year-old Oksana Konovalenko old was diagnosed with a cardiac defect. The child needs to undergo medical examination and treatment in a specialized Kiev Amosov Heart Institute. Besides, this girl has a fast-growing hemangioma near her right eye. Oksana needs to undergo a course of chemotherapy to stop the growth of the tumor.
10-year-old twin sisters Nadya and Lyuba Akimova appeared to be the carriers of TB infection and were diagnosed with hypoplasia of thyroid gland.
10-year-old Alyona Sterhun also appeared to have major thyroid problems and the needs hormonal treatment.
11-year-old Sasha Yuryev was found a hypoplasia of his thyroid gland for the first time in his life. This boy looks as if he were 6 years old. It appeared that he needs growth hormones to improve his physical development. This kid also has a very poor sight.
5-year old Lena Ushakova was brought to the center with pneumonia. Besides it appeared that she has thyroid problems as well. The child was prescribed medical treatment and her teacher was given free medicaments for little Lena’s treatment.
